KINETECH ARTS FEATURED ARTIST SERIES

First workshop production.

When you meet someone, how do you evaluate whether they are safe or threatening? Who gets a nod of recognition? Who triggers you to put up your guard? In America, White people infamously find Black people threatening. And Black people find White people threatening. And everyone else falls in between those two poles. But where are the risks? What have we learned from our ancestors? How do our split-second habits shape other people’s lives?

The award-winning, innovative, interdisciplinary art and technology dance company, Kinetech Arts invited me to present at their bi-monthly Featured Artist Series. People had been asking about my live wax painting performances. They thought I would present a slideshow of my work. I took the opportunity to present a first draft of a completely new idea.

I shared the evening with the amazing Clover Mathis, reading an excerpt from his memoir of growing up in the Jim Crow South and moving to New York City to dance with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
